Kiel, Germany – 21 July 2026 – north.io is entering its next phase of growth. Following a new investment round led by its existing investor VAERING, a Hamburg-based family investment company, the leading Ocean Big Data specialist will accelerate the development of its technology, expand customer project delivery, and further strengthen the dual-use potential of its data and AI technologies.
north.io develops solutions that enable the secure processing, structuring, analysis and operational use of large volumes of underwater data. Its technologies are deployed across civil sectors such as offshore infrastructure, renewable energy, environmental monitoring and geospatial data management, while playing an increasingly important role in maritime security and defence applications.
Over the past months, north.io has secured several defence contracts and established strategic partnerships with globally operating defence companies. At the same time, the company continues to see growing demand from the offshore industry. This development highlights the value of north.io's Ocean Big Data solutions across both civil and security-critical environments—particularly where maritime data, secure IT infrastructure, rugged hardware and AI-powered analytics come together.
"The world's oceans are among our most strategically important environments. Our technologies help make them more visible and actionable by transforming complex data into valuable insights for infrastructure, energy, environmental management and, increasingly, security and defence applications," says Jann Wendt, Co-CEO and Founder of north.io. "This additional investment provides the foundation to further scale our Ocean Big Data technologies, expand into new markets and strengthen our position as an independent technology partner."
The current funding round reinforces north.io's position as an independent Ocean Big Data company. Existing shareholders, including VAERING, the Gabler Group and the company's founders, are reaffirming their long-term commitment. north.io will continue to operate independently while benefiting from the financial strength and strategic support of its shareholders.
"Independence and neutrality are key values for our customers and partners," says Frithjof Hennemann, Co-CEO of north.io. "north.io stands for independent technology development, open partnerships and long-term reliability. In markets where trust, sovereignty and security are critical, this positioning is more important than ever."
The additional funding will be invested in further advancing the company's technology platform, accelerating customer project delivery and driving international expansion. north.io will continue to pursue a partnership-driven approach, collaborating with established industrial and defence companies as well as local partners in international markets.
By expanding its dual-use business, north.io is positioning itself at the intersection of Ocean Big Data, artificial intelligence, secure data infrastructure and maritime sovereignty. The company's mission is to enable complex ocean data to support better decision-making across civil, industrial and security-critical applications.
